About the Artist
This week’s artist is Nancy Young, graduating this year with a BFA in printmaking. She told us she was a student when she was younger in 1984 but was disqualified from the university because of failing grades due to bipolar and substance abuse disorders. Now she has been really involved in her printmaking major by going to different classes or show around Southern California to be like her exhibition title which is, As The Crow Flies. The reason why she decided on the title was that she was a person going around the city to increase her skills in printmaking. She did mention that she isn’t in for the money that her art will have in the future because she has a steady job as a programmer for Orange County.
Her exhibition, As The Crow Flies, was chosen because she traveled to different parts of Southern California for art workshops, shows, and classes to improve her artwork. Her art work had many different textures by sheets of canvas to a little sheet of metal that was put into acid to have a design. There was a piece that looked like a star that was made out of sand too that was a little different for this exhibition. Most of the pieces had birds eye views of certain locations from California State University all the way to her home city. The colors that were used were black, silver or grey and white to make it look dull. You could tell from her different pieces that she has had lots of practice and patients with her pieces.
When we were interviewing Nancy, she told us you have to be the person to go out and try new experiences. She explained that there will be hardships throughout the lifetime but it will make you fly higher. Now she can leave California State University of Long Beach happy that she achieved her goal of having an art degree. She also mention none of her pieces were planned but happened as it occurred. Nancy is grateful she was given another chance to finish her goal of having an art degree.
Synthesis/ My Experience
This week’s artist conversation was really cool because she allowed us to touch some of her pieces that she passed around. You could tell she really loved what she did and had passion towards her work. I loved how her pieces tied each piece somehow together from the bird’s eye view of streets to heads of certain crows. This was a good way to end the semester of gallery walks to see what Nancy came up with. Overall this semester was really eye opening with the different artist showing there work and putting the time they did for what they love to do.
